Location:
Fort Monroe, Virginia
Client: Norfolk District, Corps of Engineers
Size: 26,445 SF
Cost: $3,122,000
Completion: 1996
This project included
the preparation of an RFP for a design-build facility intended to integrate
and expand existing programs at the site. Facilities at the Center include:
- a large multi-purpose
room
- indoor pool
- locker and toilet
rooms
- kitchen/vending
area
- administrative
offices
- youth services
computer room and game room
- crafts rooms
- automotive shop
- storage and mechanical
spaces
Though the Center
is not in the historical district of Fort Monroe, exterior materials were
chosen based on the Installation Design Guide and in keeping with the
historical nature of the base. Brick was used for the exterior finish.
The massing of the building did not lend itself to a sloping roof system.
Large spans were required to house the pool and multi-purpose rooms. Sections
of sloped standing seam metal roof were used as accents at entry and exit
doors. The windows were designed to be reminiscent of the divided light
windows used in the historical buildings. Site work included parking,
landscaping, utility extensions, and improvement of circulation at the
existing adjacent bowling center.
