Historical Housing Renovations

This project includes the whole house renovation of seven General Officer Quarters and sixteen Enlisted Quarters. The buildings were constructed in the 1930's. They have been nominated for the Historical Register. Our office worked with the State Historical Preservation Officers (SHPO) to ensure compliance with the guidelines for historic renovation. Special attention was paid to interior details for a more historically accurate look, while preserving the modern function of the spaces.

The scope of work for the GOQ's included:

  • Asbestos and lead paint abatement
  • Redesign of kitchens and bathrooms
  • Provision of new mechanical and electrical systems
  • Demolition of existing interior plaster for installation of mechanical and electrical systems
  • Provision of wall and ceiling finishes and insulation of hte exterior walls
  • Protection and refinishing of the existing hardwood floors throughout
  • Protection and refinishing of the existing hardwood floors throughout
  • Replacement of aluminum windows with historically appropriate simulated divided lite wood windows
  • Other exterior work included, repointing of mortar joints, replacement of deteriorated exterior wood, slate roof repairs and installtion of a french-drain system

The scope of work for the Enlisted Quarters included:

  • Asbestos and lead paint abatement
  • Redesign of the second floor spaces to convert the units from four-bedroom, one and one-half bath units, to three-bedroom, two and one-half bath units. The laundry was moved from the basement to the second floor and a master bath was added.
  • Redesign of the kitchen to increase efficiency and provide direct entry to the dining room
  • Provision of new electrical systems
  • Provision of a new condensing unit and mechanical distribution system
  • Provision of wall and ceiling finishes and insulation of the exterior walls
  • Protection and refinishing of the existing hardwood floors throughout
  • Replacement of aluminum windows with historically appropriate simulated divided lite wood windows
  • Removal of asphalt shingles and provision of clay tile roofing at four units
  • Other exterior work included, repointing of mortar joints, replacement of screen porch framing, redesign of roof drainage and regrading to provide drainage away from buildings
